A donation of $1,000 was presented to Southern Appalachia ountain Stewards, also known as SAMS, on Dec. 16.

Carol Moore and Akwe Starnes of Christ Episcopal Church in Big Stone Gap presented the check to Jessica Fullen and Adam Malle of SAMS.

Moore said the contribution came about from a holiday bazaar held between All Saints and Christ Episcopal churches. Moore said:

“Every year, we have a craft bazaar with food and hand-made crafts. This year, a thousand dollars was raised. We wanted to give that to SAMS because of all the work they do for the community, the environment and the people.”

SAMS’ Lonesome Pine Mutual Aid program was an inspiration for the donation, Moore said. The program provides a community meal and hygiene and grocery bistro each month for the community.

SAMS has been in Wise County since 2007. It is a grassroots, member-led, community-based organization whose stated purpose is to make a better future for in the Appalachian coalfields region.
